What is a bespoke wedding cake?
So what exactly is a bespoke wedding cake?
A bespoke wedding cake design, is a design that is made especially and only for you, no one else! why settle for a wedding cake that has been created before, when you can have something completely unique and original for your wedding day?
Wedding cake designing requires creativity, artistic flair and often thinking outside the box. It is very easy to find images on social media or the internet to replicate, but a replica will never be exactly the same - perhaps it will even be just an inferior version of what was first seen - so actually cause disappointment, rather than joy.
A wedding cake design can never be completely copied exactly, particularly if the construction of the cake is being done by two completely different people. They may be at different skill levels, may be working in different environments, may have different tools, may use different ingredients…….the list goes on. So why ask your wedding cake designer to be someone they are not? Why ask them to create something that is not allowing them to do what they love and what they can do best? That is not going to make them, or you, happy!
There are many thousands of cake designers in the UK, but I hope you will choose your wedding cake designer because you like ‘their style’ not because they can replicate someone else’s cake design really well.

Do bespoke wedding cakes cost more?
There is no exact answer here as it is dependent on a number of factors, such as geographical area and skill level of your cake maker - but as a rule, generally yes they will cost more than a cake that has been made many times before or an ‘off the shelf’ design. If you were having a wedding dress or a wedding suit custom made just for you, you would expect the cost to be higher than buying something off the peg. The same applies with anything custom, including wedding cakes.
So why is this?
The design is a one off specially made piece just for you. it will not be recreated.
The time involved in the designing of the cake will be greater and more planning will be done.
You are paying for the expertise and experience of your cake designer. A cake designer without as much expertise and experience not be confident in designing bespoke pieces.
So obviously, taking this into all into account, bespoke wedding cakes may not be for everyone. and this is absolutely fine.
As a guide, most of my couples have a budget of between £650-800 on average for a wedding cake . Often it is more than this, but it gives you some idea of what a bespoke cake might cost from me.
But what if your wedding budget won’t stretch to a fully custom cake design?
Certain cake designs, like semi naked cakes (sponge cakes with a thin layer of buttercream on the outside, that the cake shows through) or plainly iced cakes with little or no detail, will cost less. However, they can be made to look more unique by the type and placement of the flowers/fruits, the height of the tiers (tall or short and mixing them up), adding some edible metallic foiling such as gold or silver leaf or adding a drip effect. All of these elements will all make your cake look different from anyone else’s. So helping to create a fabulous bespoke cake but on a smaller budget.

Wedding cake inspiration
So where do i get inspiration for my unique wedding cake designs?
My wedding cakes are often inspired by a couples wedding stationery. With such an abundance of modern wedding stationery designs now available using design elements such as; modern calligraphy, metallic foiling, silk ribbons, watercolour washes, monograms etc, when i see the wedding stationery, it very often just shouts ‘CAKE’ to me! And then a new wedding cake design is born!
As well as stationery, i also get Inspiration from interior design trends, architectural design, floristry trends and modern art and ceramics. I really do think that inspiration can be found everywhere, Often in the most unexpected places.
